HYPNOTHERAPY

What is hypnosis, really?

Driving down the freeway you miss your exit because you are deep in thought, or you find yourself parked in your driveway and you have no memory of how you got there. This concentrated focus, when your outer world appears to drop away, is an example of hypnosis.  Whenever you go on “automatic” while exercising, mowing the lawn or taking a shower, you enter into an hypnotic state.

Hypnosis is a relaxed state of intensified focus and concentration, similar to meditation or guided visualization.

In hypnosis we bypass the reasoning, evaluating, judging part of our conscious mind, and access the subconscious.  The subconscious mind does not judge or filter experiences.  It is the seat of intuition, emotion and patterns of habit.  Specific thoughts and suggestions are implanted in the subconscious, once accepted they help change unwanted patterns of behavior.

What is hypnotherapy used for?

Hypnosis can be effective for the following concerns:

  • Anxiety
  • Creativity
  • Depression
  • Dream work
  • Health problems
  • Learning
  • Motivation
  • Pain control
  • Panic
  • Performance
  • Phobias
  • Self-esteem
  • Sleep
  • Smoking
  • Stress reduction
  • Weight loss

Am I really in control during our sessions?

In spite of what you may have seen at a stage show or in a movie, hypnosis is not mind control. You cannot be made to say or do anything against your will. You are always in control and are usually aware of everything that occurs.

Hypnosis is really self-hypnosis. The hypnotherapist serves as a facilitator. You make all the decisions!

What is a typical session like?

We will discuss your reason for seeking hypnotherapy. We will then discuss technique as well as the desired effect. Every session is different; depending on the technique. The next step is to gently place you into a relaxed and focused state. Once there, I serve as facilitator guiding you through processes, which appear very similar to visualizations.

Typically, the first session is a collaboration between the client and the therapist. In other words, the therapist facilitates the creation of suggestions that a client may make to his/her subconscious. A CD of these suggestions is given to you for daily listening and reinforcement.
